The competition provided our students with a unique and exciting experience, having the opportunity to engage in a business challenge that enabled them to develop key employability skills and understand what it's like to be an ICAEW Chartered Accountant for the day. The key aim of the day was to test their business acumen, as well as their problem-solving, communication, decision making and team working skills.
The day started with the opportunity to meet a range of potential employers which included Albert Goodman and KPMG to find out what opportunities will be available to them after A-Levels, which included the new Trailblazer higher apprenticeships. They were then introduced to their Business Mentor, Adrian Knight from Sheppard Rockey & Williams, who has over 35 years experience as an ACA Chartered Accountant. Time was spent reviewing an information pack outlining a business scenario and a set of challenges which involved producing a critical SWOT analysis and producing a range of innovative recommendations to the business's Board of Directors.
Throughout the day all 17 teams were observed on how well they worked as a team, how effectively they communicated and how they managed their time under tight deadlines.
Our team came third behind the winning team Colyton Grammar School and Blundell's School who were second. We were commended for our confident approach, excellent presentation style and enthusiasm which impressed the judges. We are due to receive a written report of our performance to help gain a deeper understanding of how to improve for 2017/18.
Adrian, who volunteered to be a mentor for the competition, has invited the team down to his accountancy firm in February 2017 for the day to meet his colleagues and gain a further insight into the career field of chartered accountancy. His knowledge and expertise was incredibly valuable and we would like to thank him for his time.
To be rated so highly out of 17 teams which were mostly independent and grammar schools from across the South West, has certainly provided our students with a fantastic experience to learn from. Well done team!
