At Huish, we understand that the transition to secondary school can feel daunting, not only for children but for parents and carers as well. This is especially true in our rural community, where many students are accustomed to the close-knit environment of smaller schools. To help ease this transition, we have developed a comprehensive programme of events designed to provide support and reassurance.
Transition Support Programme:
- Individual Meetings: Starting after Autumn Half Term, Ms. Robinson will meet with your child at their current school, regardless of whether it is in our catchment area.
- Class Visits: From May onwards, Mrs. Boyes, Ms. Robinson, and former students will visit your child’s class to answer any questions they may have.
- Treasure Hunts: Held in March/April, these events give students an opportunity to explore the school when it is quiet. Invitations will be sent out.
- Parents’ Information Evening: Scheduled for the Spring Term, this evening provides a chance to meet key staff and learn more about how the Academy operates.
- Meet the Tutor: In the second half of the Summer Term, students will have the chance to meet their tutor.
- Transition Day: in Early July, your child will spend the day at the school, becoming familiar with their new environment.
- Friendship Events: Additional events are held for students joining on their own or in small groups to help them make friends before the school year starts.
- Welcome Postcard: Each new student will receive a personalised welcome postcard.
- Staggered Start: On the first day of the Autumn term, the year group will have the school to themselves to settle in comfortably.
- Transition Meetings: We will hold meetings with parents of children with additional needs to ensure their transition is smooth.
- Additional Visits: Extra visits can be arranged for children who may find change challenging.
If you feel you need individual support or reassurance, please don't hesitate to contact Ms. Robinson at ElizabethRobinson@hea.ac.uk. We are here to make this transition as smooth as possible for both students and families.
