Students visit Jaguar Landrover

48 Business and Product Design (GCSE and A-Level) students along with Mrs Swaine, Mr Madge, Mr Bolling and Mr Hughes travelled to Solihull, Birmingham on Monday 7 March for a factory tour and educational workshop about key operational techniques used by the global car manufacturer.

We learnt about the company history, their product range, key operational concepts such as Lean Production with was supported with a detailed tour of different areas of the 300 acre site.

Students spent time amongst employees in the Press room, watching steel and aluminium sheets being moulded into vehicle components as well as key areas of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and the new Jaguar F-Pace production line. Being able to watch such a wide range of robotics in action with such little human contact was fascinating. Learning about such large investments in technological innovation really demonstrated the strength of the U.K. Car manufacturing industry, despite the majority of materials and components being imported from Europe. An interesting debate topic in lessons will soon arise about the impact of Brexit on JLR.

Overall a very valuable experience for both students and staff alike - although staff were slightly disappointed about the lack of complimentary vehicles, maybe next time!
