Department: Citizenship

Curriculum Intention:

Citizenship education develops knowledge, skills and understanding that students need to play a full part in society as active and responsible citizens. We consider Citizenship Education to be comprised of three main areas:

Social and moral responsibility: Pupils learning self-confidence and socially and morally responsible behaviour both in and beyond the classroom, towards those in authority and towards each other.

Community involvement: Pupils learn about becoming helpfully involved in the life and concerns of their neighbourhood and communities, including learning through community involvement and service to the community.

Political literacy: Pupils learn about the institutions, problems and practices of our democracy and how to make themselves effective in the life of the nation, locally, regionally and nationally, through skills and values as well as knowledge - a concept wider than political knowledge alone.

In England, Citizenship is a statutory National Curriculum foundation subject in secondary schools.

Curriculum Implementation:

At KS3 students follow the ASDAN Short Course Qualification in Citizenship that culminates in external certification at the end of Year 9. Students complete the following units of study:

    • Yr 7 Community and responsibility and How Laws are made in the UK.

Monitoring and assessing curriculum impact:

For all Short Courses, Learners must present evidence of their activities in an organised portfolio.

This will contain:

  • A record of challenges completed, with supporting evidence for each challenge.
  • Recording documents, showing how learners have planned and reviewed their activities.
  • Summary of achievement, highlighting skills development.
  • Personal statement.
